Joel and Ethan Coen’s Upcoming Horror Movie Promises “Lots of Fake Blood and ... Feathers"

February 26, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

UPDATE: Here’s another interview, with The Wrap, where Ethan further details this new horror movie that he and Joel are working on:

Besides “Honey Don’t,” Ethan said he and Joel have written a new script together that they finished last summer. It’s a horror movie. Why a horror movie? And why now? “Well, why now for any of them,” Coen said. He promises a lot of fake blood. And … feathers?

EARLIER: In an AP interview with Ethan Coen, who is out there promoting his delightful B-movie “Drive Away Dolls,” the writer-director confirms his upcoming reunion with brother Joel.

After Ethan is done shooting “Honey Don't,” in the Spring, the brothers plan to reteam as directors for a horror film that they wrote fresh, and not from an old screenplay.

We talked about it for a long time but we hadn’t actually written anything. We talked about the starting point. It was in a mental drawer.

It also turns out that it was Ethan who instigated the short-term breakup. He just wanted a new direction.

It wasn’t breaking up. It was just me going, ‘Ugghh,’ “It was great. It’s always great. But it’s not like we were out of contact. We see each other all the time, talk all the time.

Joel and Ethan’s horror film is supposed to start filming in the fall. There aren’t any plot details that we know of, but it’s a reunion that is much anticipated by movie fans.

They are one of the great living American filmmakers, and we miss them dearly. Joel and Ethan haven’t collaborated on a new film since 2018’s “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” which was a Netflix release, and premiered at the Venice Film Festival the month prior.

At a January Masterclass in Norway, Ethan had confirmed that he and Joel had already written a new script together, and that the plan was for them to direct it “very soon”:

It's a pure horror film, and it gets very bloody. If you like Blood Simple, I think you'll enjoy it.

Ethan’s ‘Drive Away Dolls’ co-writer, Tricia Cooke, added that the film is "horribly funny". All the preparations are done. Hopefully, a 2025 debut will happen.
