Chris Evans Sets MCU Return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

December 9, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

Chris Evans is set to make his MCU return in “Avengers: Doomsday,” according to The Wrap. The exact nature of his role is unknown, but he did play Captain America, and it’d be odd if he didn’t return as that character. Then again, Robert Downey Jr, formerly Iron Man, is also set to return, but as Doctor Doom.

Evans last appeared as Captain America in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.” Anthony Mackie will be playing the new iteration of Captain America in “Captain America: Brave New World” opposite Harrison Ford, which opens on on Feb. 14, 2025, and by all indications he will be in ‘Doomsday’ as well.

As for the rest of the cast, it’s honestly anybody’s guess at this point. In addition to Evans and Downey, the most rumored would-be-returnees would be Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Anthony Mackie (Captain America), Simu Liu (Shang Chi), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes), Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool), Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk) and Charlie Cox (Daredevil).

The Russo Brothers, who directed Evans in “Captain America: Civil War,” “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” are returning to direct “Avengers: Doomsday” and its direct sequel “Avengers: Secret Wars.”

The latest ‘Doomsday’ writer, replacing the recently exited Michael Waldron, and Jeff Loveness, will be Stephen McFeely who co-wrote ‘Endgame’ and ‘Infinity War.’ The film is supposed to begin production in March 2025 and run until August — that’s six months of shooting.

‘Doomsday’ is a major gamble for Marvel. It was recently reported that Downey Jr. would be earning more than $100 million for the next two ‘Avengers’ movies, and that’s not even counting box office bonuses. The Russos, are set to earn around $40 million per movie.

“Avengers: Doomsday” will be in theaters May 1st, 2026, and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” is due out in 2027.
