Justin Kurzel is Pitching A ‘Mad Max' Prequel

December 2, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

Filmmaker Justin Kurzel (“Nitram” “The Order”) tells Collider that he has a good idea for a prequel to George Miller’s ‘Mad Max’ franchise.

Kurzel is very militant about his idea of doing an instalment set in the early days of the fall of civilization before we encounter Mel Gibson’s Max Rockatansky. He is now seeking George Miller to pitch his project:

I’ve always been curious about what happened before the first Mad Max – what was that world with the Nightrider, pre-Mad Max? I’ve always been very curious about that and very tempted to talk to George about the possibility of a world that is pre-Mad Max 1 and what that is. That’s been one that I’ve always been really curious about because it was such an influential film in my time. It’s an amazing franchise, but I’ve always been curious about those moments before that first one because it’s set up so richly. And it’s such a great time in Australia, too, that period.

I don’t think Miller has ever spoken about making a pre-apocalypse Max movie. If anything, Miller would probably want to make “Mad Max: The Wasteland” which has Tom Hardy’s Max in the events leading up to ‘Fury Road.’ I might be in the minority here, but ‘Wasteland’ is the one he should have done before “Furiosa.”

With that said, and after the disappointing box-office return for this year’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” there’s been no talks about another ‘Mad Max’ movie getting made. Miller also holds the rights to the entire franchise, and I doubt he’d want anybody else to take over.

Miller has directed all five of the films to date from 1979’s “Mad Max” through to ‘Furiosa.’ These stories are his babies, and he’s going to bring them all the way to his grave. Having a fellow Aussieman, Kurzel, tagging along to help out might not even be enough to sway him.

I say, bring back Mad Mel and complete the series.
