CONFIRMED: ‘Squid: America' Series is David Fincher's Next Project

October 28, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

We’ve been reporting on this one for over a year, but David Fincher’s “Squid Game: America” has finally been confirmed by a trade (Deadline). As I wrote last week, it’s no longer a movie, but rather a series, taking place in the United States.

The report goes on to state that Fincher has put all other film projects on hold for this one, he’s going to be concentrating most of his 2025 on “Squid Game: America.” However, Deadline does hint that he might sneak in another project next year, potentially a feature film. As someone who welcomes anything by Fincher, this is still disheartening news — he should stick to original filmmaking.

Regardless, last year Fincher hired writer Dennis Kelly (“Utopia”) to work on the scripts. There’s no word yet on whether Kelly is still involved. The project is indeed not a remake of Korea’s ‘Squid Game,’ but rather a spinoff series that’ll further delve into the mythology that’s already been built up by the previous incarnation.

Fincher is coming off last year’s “The Killer.” He has an exclusive, multi-year deal with Netflix that was recently extended for an three additional years. Fincher has been all about Netflix for 10 years now, delving into the streaming game full-on, creating shows such as “House of Cards,” “Mindhunter“ “Love, Death + Robots” and films like “Mank” and “The Killer.”
