The trailer for Matthew Vaughn’s “Argylle,” a meta-bending, globe-trotting spy thriller, was released last fall. It didn’t make much of a dent, buzz-wise.
And now, Deadline is reporting that “Argylle,” which is being released next Friday, will have an opening in the “teens,” so anywhere between $13-18 million — attaining the higher end of that number will depend on how good the reviews are.
I’m supposed to watch “Argylle” next Wednesday. That’s when the press screening occurs — the following day, Thursday previews will commence on the film. Vaughn is best known for the ‘Kingsman’ franchise and “Kick-Ass.” One wishes that he could go back to his “Layer Cake” roots, alas, we’ll just have to settle with “Argylle,” for now.
This also won’t be the last that we hear from Vaughn as he’s currently a very highly sought talent in Hollywood — he’s rebooting “Kick-Ass,” helming another ‘Kingsman,’ directing a Damien Chazelle penned musical, and just completed production on a mysterious new action film.
“Argylle” stars Bryce Dallas Howard as a spy novel author who encounters a real-life, cat-allergic spy (Sam Rockwell) on a train. Based on the trailer, their adventures are filled with over the top action. The rest of the cast includes Henry Cavill, John Cena, Dua Lipa, Bryan Cranston, Ariana DeBose and Catherine O’Hara and Samuel L. Jackson.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Bryce Dallas Howard “(Jurassic World” franchise) is Elly Conway, the reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels, whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie. But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books—which center on secret agent Argylle and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate—begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past.
Apple produced the film, which is being distributed by Universal Pictures and scheduled to land in theaters on February 2.
