So, Warner Bros, in one of these sketchy incidents, that keep happening of late, “overestimated” the weekend numbers for “The Color Purple” by over $2 million.
Warners had originally stated that ‘Color Purple’ made $13.8 million, but the actual number is said to be around $11.7 million. It’s too late now. The media ran with the original numbers and most won’t correct it. That, my friends, is how you manipulate a narrative.
Why would Warner Bros spend $100 million, yes, that’s the budget, on a musical that’s basically torture porn? Well, the only reason I can think of is for Oscars, which “The Color Purple” might not even be in contention for.
It might sneak in a Best Picture nomination, but I’m not holding my breath, and Danielle Brooks could potentially land a Supporting Actress nom, but that’s not enough for such a costly endeavor. The film will most likely lose a lot of money as, by Monday evening, its domestic total stood at around $47 million.
As expected, Snyder's latest is being torn apart by TIFF attendees. No mercy given. The film, which had its world premiere this evening, is being called by some one of the worst movies to ever premiere at the festival.
