BAFTA Snubs Lily Gladstone, DiCaprio, Scorsese and ‘Barbie’ — ‘Saltburn’ Actors Elordi, Keoghan and Pike Nominated!

January 18, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

Yet again, Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” affirmed its position as the Oscar frontrunner. The 2024 BAFTA nominations were announced this morning, and Nolan’s film landed 13 nominations.

Close behind was Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” with 11 nominations, including for Best Film and Best Actress (Emma Stone). However, the bigger news is what didn’t make it …

The snubbing of Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” across so many categories, is surprising, to say the least. Yes, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling were nominated, but there was no room for it in either Best Film or Best Director.

The five nominations earned by “Barbie” has it tied with “Saltburn,” which overperformed with nominations for Barry Keoghan, Rosamund Pike and Jacob Elordi. Before these noms, there was some chatter that Saltburn’s awards stock was rising, especially with its mega popularity on streaming, and this morning proved that.

However, the biggest shocker is the total snubbing of “Killers of the Flower Moon” director Martin Scorsese, lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio and its lead actress Lily Gladstone. What happened? Gladstone now has a steep hill to climb for the Best Actress Oscar, losing out on the precious British voting block of the Academy makes it practically impossible for her to win.

In September, Apple announced they would campaign Gladstone as Lead Actress. A total surprise move on the streamer’s part. She was a cinch to win Supporting Actress.

Gladstone’s screentime in the 206-minute ‘Killers’ was timed by X user Matthew Stewart, and she’s in the film for 56 minutes. This means Gladstone is in less than a third of the 3½-hour movie. She’s NOT a lead in the film.

Last year, BAFTA members made up around half (325) of the UK Academy voters (650). There has definitely been a rise in the number of international voters in the Oscar race, the UK bloc is the largest, followed by various European and Scandinavian countries. So, today’s nominations have a major impact in how the Oscar nominations might turn out.
