‘Poor Things’ Wins the Golden Lion at Venice

September 9, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

It was not that surprising that Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” won the Golden Lion this evening at Venice.

It was the best-reviewed film of this year’s competition. It’ll be the first of several prizes Lanthimos’ film will be winning this awards season. It’ll next be screening next month at the New York Film Festival.

Last year, Laura Poitras’ “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” won the top prize. Past Golden Lion winners also include “Roma,” “Nomadland,” “The Shape of Water,” “Joker” and “Happening.”

Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s “Evil Does Not Exist” won the Grand Jury Prize (second place).

Matteo Garonne won Best Director for “Io Capitano.” The film was said to have been rejected by Cannes earlier this year.

Agniezka Holland’s “Green Border” won the Special Jury Prize for her immigrant crisis drama.

Cailee Spaeny (“Priscilla”) won Best Actress.

Peter Sarsgaard (“Memory” won Best Actor.

Pablo Larrain’s “El Conde” won Best Screenplay.

Completely shut out were Michael Mann’s “Ferrari,” Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” Betrand Bonello’s “The Beast,” David Fincher’s “The Killer,” and Ava DuVernay’s “Origin.”
