I’ll position this one as a “rumor” because it sounds too wild to be true.
Sometimes a filmmaker gets attached to direct a movie that just seems like such a bad match on-paper, the following is one of those cases. Take this news with a major grain of salt.
Word is spreading online that Marvel wants Alfonso Cuaron to direct ”Avengers: Secret Wars.” This directing gig is so far beneath Cuaron’s talents that I refuse to believe he’s going to get sucked up by the Marvel-Disney machine.
Then again, Cuaron, the filmmaker behind “Roma,” “Y Tu Mama Tambien” and “Children of Men,” has dabbled in IP franchises before — back in 2004, Cuaron directed “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.” Also, his “Gravity” was a big commercial statement.
Let’s just believe for a second that this rumor is in fact true, and that the folks over at Marvel are seeking his services out — would Cuaron actually want to make an ‘Avengers’ movie?
Cuaron is one of the top-tier directors out there, he can probably find financing for almost any passion project of his (such as the upcoming, SAG-strike delayed, “Jane”). This doesn’t make any sense unless he desperately needs the paycheck.
Last week, there had been rumors that Sam Raimi was also in the running to direct Marvel’s “Avengers: Secret Wars.”
