‘Sound of Freedom’ Nabs Whopping $14 Million on its First Day of Release, More Than ‘Indy 5’

July 5, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

UPDATED: Angel Studios’ “Sound of Freedom”, a drama starring Jim Caviezel, grossed around $14 million on its first day of release.

Disney’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” made less, and also had the luxury of playing in 2,000 more theaters. “Sound of Freedom” has a limp budget of $15 million. ‘Indiana Jones 5’ cost around $329 million to make.

Here’s IndieWire’s Tom Brueggmann:

In one day, “Freedom” grossed more the full domestic runs of recent awards contenders like “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “TAR,” and “Women Talking.” Its gross nearly doubles that of current independent hit “Past Lives” (A24).

Yesterday, I had mentioned how “Sound of Freedom” had already sold two million tickets in pre-sales. It’s set to be the most profitable indie of the year, by a wide margin.

The film is about about former Homeland Security agent Tim Ballard (Jim Caviezel), who “took rescuing abducted children around the globe into his own hands.”

Originally produced by Fox, and later canned by Disney, director Alejandro Monteverde, mostly known for the anti-abortion drama “Unplanned,” shot “Sound of Freedom” in 2018. Angel Studios pounced on the film after Disney tried to nix it.

The film’s demographic is the faith-based community, which is why Hollywood is ignoring it; it hasn’t even come close to hitting the mainstream. Metacritic doesn’t have it listed on its website and it only has 13 reviews listed on Rotten Tomatoes.

I was not invited to any press screenings either, if they even happened in my neck of the woods, which I highly doubt. Has anybody here seen this film?
