Rumor: Is David Lynch Shooting a New Film?

July 1, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

Filmmaker and David Lynch fan/friend Cameron Cloutier confirmed yesterday that Lynch is preparing to go into full-on production as soon as the writers strike ends. We don’t know if it’s a movie or TV series.

On 06.03.23, Lynch was, supposedly, spotted shooting something in West Hollywood. That rumor never went anywhere further into detail, a simple tweet, that started the buzz, was then deleted.

Lynch abruptly stopped his daily YouTube weather reports around five months ago. No reason was given, but by then he’d been doing these highly entertaining videos for a few years. A source of mine at the time said he was boarding the “work train.”

Lynch hasn’t directed a film since 2006’s “Inland Empire,” unless you count his 2017 Showtime series “Twin Peaks: The Return” as a movie. There have been rumors, for a few years now, of Lynch shooting a secret project, on and off.

Back in March of 2021, there was a rumor that Lynch was partnering with Netflix for an upcoming limited series.

Lynch veterans Naomi Watts and Laura Dern had even been spotted attending a meeting at Netflix headquarters for this undisclosed project. Then the same source for this news said Netflix canceled the project.

No plot has been revealed about any of the rumoured projects, but there were rumblings of a possible “Mulholland Drive” spin-off or, even a continuation of “Twin Peaks: The Return.” The titles “Wisteria” and “Unrecorded Night” kept being uttered in Lynch message boards.

This is all speculation at this point, but all signs are pointing towards Lynch potentially working on something new. Whatever it is —TV, movie, shorts— we’re all in.
