Todd Haynes’ 1930s Gay Drama With Joaquin Phoenix Will be Rated NC-17 [Updated]

May 22, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

UPDATED: Haynes hasn’t even shot this movie yet and he’s already implying it’ll be a button-pushing endeavor:

Joaquin was pushing me further and going ‘no, let’s go further. This will be an NC-17 film.

Haynes added that he wrote the story writer with Jon Raymond and that Phoenix will share the story credit.

EARLIER: Glad to hear that Les Inrockuptibles got the exclusive scoop for this one. It sounds interesting.

They are reporting that Joaquin Phoenix will star in Todd Haynes’ next film. Haynes describes it as “a love story between two men” set in the 1930s.

There’s another movie I want to make in early 2024. It's a project that Joaquin Phoenix brought to me, and it's set in the 1930s. A love story between two men, based on a screenplay original, very daring. This is, I believe, his first gay role. I am very excited about this project!

Haynes premiered “May/December” last night at Cannes. It’s a comeback of sorts for Haynes who is earning his best reviews since 2015’s “Carol.”
