Pedro Almodovar’s ‘Strange Way of Life’ Confirmed For Cannes

April 11, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

You can put this headline under “No, s*it, Sherlock.”

We all knew Pedro Almodovar’s “Strange Way of Life” was going to the Cannes Film Festival, but today it was confirmed by the fest itself.

“Strange Way of Life” will be presented in the Cannes Premiere section, with the director and the two lead actors, Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal, in attendance

Almodovar’s 30-minute short was rumored to be the opener for the 76th edition of the festival, but that didn’t come to fruition. There had actually been rumors that three short films would be the Cannes openers, with Godard’s “Scenario” being one of the others.

Starring Hawke, Pascal and Manu Rios, the film was shot last fall. According to Esquire, the short will center on two former gunslingers (played by Pascal and Hawke) who rekindle an old friendship— “possibly of the romantic variety.”

Almodovar is also set to shoot his first full-length feature in English this fall in NYC. We don’t know much about this film except that it’ll have a female lead.

These last few weeks, Cannes has been confirming the obvious titles: Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” James Mangold’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” Maiwenn’s “Jeanne du Barry,” and now Almodovar. The entire lineup will be revealed on Thursday.
