This movie is either going to be gigantic hit or a total miss, there can’t be nothing in between.
Todd Phillips, Last Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix are currently shooting “Joker: Folie à Deux” in Los Angeles until next week.
Photos and videos seem to be leaking from that set on a daily basis. Most of the images we’ve seen have been outdoor shots, but the sequel is said to mostly take place in Arkham Asylum.
Grace Randolph reported a month ago that ‘Folie A Deux’ will tell the story from the perspective of both characters: Harley and The Joker. The film’s main plot will revolve around the music therapy sessions they both have at Arkham Asylum.
The sequel is said to be a diegetic musical, almost like “Cabaret.” Considering that the last movie was a King of Comedy/Taxi Driver knock-off, this next one could very well likely borrow from another Scorsese, the musical “New York, New York”. Gaga was also heard singing “Couple Of Swells” by Fred Astaire and Judy Garland during an on-set take.
What does this all amount to? We’re not entirely sure. On-paper, it sounds like a flamboyant mess of a movie waiting to happen. Did we really need a sequel to 2019’s “Joker”? Least of all one starring Lady Gaga?
However, Phillips is clearly going for something much more ambitious than originally perceived with this sequel. They’re throwing the blueprint out of the door and making something singular, unique, a very dark movie musical.
The best thing Phillips can do is make a completely different movie than the first one. That way it’ll separate both films as entirely different entities. I don’t think having Gaga is such a terrible idea, might as well go full-on WEIRD with this one, even if it’s a major risk.
Production on ‘Folie A Deux’ started on November 30th and is said to have a wrap date of April 6th. The film already has an Oct. 4, 2024 release planned, so you can scratch away any hopes of seeing it this year.
