A bit odd, but Syzygy Publishing, the new Image Imprint headed by Chris Ryall and Ashley Wood, announced they are collaborating with Francis Ford Coppola on a graphic novel tie-in to his upcoming film, ”Megalopolis”.
Jacob Phillips will provide art for Coppola’s graphic novel debut. Also, according to Ryall, “Megalopolis” will be released theatrically in 2024:
“He’s [Coppola] been writing for decades trying to get it exactly where he wants it to be and waiting for the technology to catch up to what he thinks it should be visually. And so, he said he wanted a graphic novel component to it. It’s going to be tied into the film in ways that that I think are unique and interesting. It’s not a straight adaptation or anything like that, but it is part of the world he’s creating.”
“Megalopolis” wrapped filming two weeks ago. If we are to gather that this will in fact be released in 2024 then there’s no reason not to believe it could show up at next year’s Cannes Film Festival.
The legend goes that Coppola told Cannes in 1979 that he wouldn’t screen “Apocalypse Now” unless it was in competition. They accepted his proposition.
It was recently revealed that Coppola gave Cannes the same ultimatum for his 2009 film “Tetro”: Competition or you just don’t get to screen the movie. Thierry Fremaux eventually rejected it. Will he do that same with “Megalopolis”?
Here’s a new synopsis of this mysterious film:
In New York, a woman is divided between loyalties to her father, who has a classical view of society, and her lover, who is more progressive and ready for the future.
“Megalopolis” stars Adam Driver, Forrest Whittaker, Jon Voight, Nathalie Emmanuel, Laurence Fishbourne, Shia LaBeouf, Aubrey Plaza, Talia Shire, and Dustin Hoffman.
