Scorsese’s ‘Killers’ Confirmed for Cannes; No Fraser or Lithgow on Cast List

March 31, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

The fact that Cannes refused to label ‘Killers’ as in or out of Competition could mean they haven’t figured out yet if it will compete for the Palme d’Or.

What we do know is that the festival confirmed this morning the presence of Scorsese’s upcoming (3 hour 20 minute?) epic.

I would guess Fremaux wants it to be in Competition just to show the world that streaming services can compete at Cannes — a backhanded slap to Netflix.

Still, don’t get your hopes up. A $200 million film vying for the Palme d’Or would be quite the oddity. I’m willing to bet against it, but if it does sneak it then … wow.

Apparently, Brendan Fraser and John Lithgow’s names are also missing from AppleTV’s web site and Cannes’ announcement. They are both said to play lawyers. Either these are small roles or their parts got snipped in the editing process.

So, there you have it. ‘Killers’ at Cannes. It doesn’t get much more official than that. Now we’re all waiting for the full lineup to be announced on April 13th.

I’ve received a few emails asking when my final predictions will be posted. Probably not until a few days before the announcement, but my competition lineup right now looks like this …

Wes Anderson, Yorgos Lanthimos, Todd Haynes
Jonathan Glazer, Alice Rohrwacher, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Jeff Nichols, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Michel Franco, Matteo Garrone, Bertrand Bonnello, Ken Loach, Robin Campillo, Abdherrane Sissako, Jessica Hausner, Maiwenn, Justine Triet, Victor Erice, Nanni Moretti and Catherine Breillat
