Margot Robbie Says A ‘Barbie’ Sequel Might Not Happen

November 25, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” grossed $1.4 billion worldwide which then led to Mattel immediately greenlighting 14 films, all now in various stages of development, this did not include an inevitable sequel for “Barbie.”

Margot Robbie’s recent comments, expressing doubts about a “Barbie” sequel should not be taken seriously. Here she is speaking to the AP:

I think we put everything we had into this one. We didn’t build it to be a trilogy or something. Greta [Gerwig] put everything into this movie, so I can’t imagine what would be next.

Translation: they haven’t offered the right amount of money yet …

We all know that money talks in Hollywood and not making a sequel to the billion dollar-grossing “Barbie” is and never will be an option. Whether it happens with Greta Gerwig or not, a sequel will eventually be made, don’t kid yourselves.

Robbie, Gerwig and Ryan Gosling did not have deals in their original contracts to return for a “Barbie” sequel. This is an unusual situation, given that most big franchises would snap up their talent in options before the movie is released.

So there are currently no options or deals in place for the main “Barbie” trio. This means that, if they do eventually sign for a sequel, they will get paid overpaid by Warner Bros to all come back. We’re talking eight figures here.

Mattel has already expressed a desire to make a sequel, and, although Gerwig has confessed that she doesn’t really have any ideas for a second movie, something will eventually pop in her head. It’s as inevitable as night turning into day.
