DGA Announces Nominees: Field, Kosinski, Daniels, McDonagh, Spielberg [Updated]

January 11, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

Now it’s the Directors Guild of America’s turn to announce its batch of nominees. They just came down the wire:

Todd Field (TÀR)
Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick)
Daniel Kwan & Daniel Schienert (EEAO)
Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin)
Steven Spielberg (The Fabelmans)

That list looks like our top five for Best Picture as well.

No James Cameron (Avatar: The Way of Water), Sarah Polley (Women Talking), Baz Luhrmann (Elvis), Ruben Ostlund (Triangle of Sadness), SS Rajamouli (RRR), Edward Berger (All Quiet on the Western Front) and Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King).

Of course, Clayton Davis is making a big fuss over there being no women nominated in the top category.

In the first time directing nominees list, they mistakenly nominated Audrey Diwan (Happening) even though this wasn’t her first film. She will probably be taken out. Either they leave it at four nominees or replace her with another filmmaker.
