‘The Wager’: Scorsese Set to Direct DiCaprio in 1740s Sea Epic

July 29, 2022 Jordan Ruimy

While we anticipate Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” the legendary filmmaker is already setting his sights on another movie produced by Apple.

Leonardo DiCaprio will be joining Scorsese’s adaptation of the newly released David Grann non-fiction book, “The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder”. Grann is also the author of “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which, as mentioned, Scorsese recently adapted. [via THR]

Set in the 1740s, Wager’s story is set in motion when a patched-together boat with 30 emaciated men landed on the coast of Brazil. The men were the surviving crew of British ship that was chasing a Spanish vessel and had crashed onto an island in South America’s Patagonia region. Their tales of surviving the seas and elements made them heroes. However, six months later another vessel, even more beat up than the first one, ended up on the coat of Chile, this one with three men. These new sailors charged that the other men were actually mutineers.

This means, not counting, ‘Killers,’ Scorsese has three movies currently in development; a Jerry Garcia biopic starring Jonah Hill, a Teddy Roosevelt biopic starring DiCaprio and “The Wager.” However, Apple is hinting that “The Wager” will be the next film Scorsese directs.

Meanwhile, Scorsese and DiCaprio, one of the great actor/director partnerships of our time, have already made six movies together, if you also include “Killers of the Flower Moon. The other five are “Gangs of New York, “The Aviator”, “The Departed”, “Shutter Island” and “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

De Niro and Scorsese, the most legendary of actor/director collaborations, have made a total of 9 films together, including “Raging Bull,” “Taxi Driver” “Goodfellas,” “Casino,” “Mean Streets,” and “The King of Comedy.”
