TIFF Lineup to World Premiere New Films By Farrelly, Hong, Lindholm and Selick

July 28, 2022 Jordan Ruimy

Today’s announced lineup for the Toronto International Film Festival looks good, but the omissions are worrying. No Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu’s “Bardo” Luca Guadagnino’s “Bones and All,” Todd Field’s “TAR,” Andrew Dominik’s “Blonde,” Paul Schrader’s “The Master Gardener,” and Noah Baumbach’s “White Noise.”

TIFF head Cameron Bailey was coy about whether or not they turned down invitations.

“I really don’t talk about movies that aren’t in the festival. I’ll just tell you that I’m incredibly excited by this lineup, and I think our audience will be too.”

There’s also no “Don’t Worry Darling,” Olivia Wilde’s follow-up to her debut “Booksmart,” which was said to not be chosen due to a conflict of interest? From Deadline:

“However, curiously not receiving a North American premiere after its Venice Film Festival world premiere is the Styles starring, Olivia Wilde directed erotic drama Don’t Worry Darling. Sources have told Deadline that a situation didn’t want to be created at TIFF whereby a star such as Styles has two competing projects pulling on his profile.

Instead, TIFF will have to settle with nabbing hot titles like Florian Zeller’s “The Son,” Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale,” Peter Farrelly’s “The Greatest Beer Run,” Sam Mendes’ “Empire of Light,” Tobias Lindholm’s “The Good Nurse,” Joanna Hogg’s “The Eternal Daughter,” Jafar Panahi’s “No Bears,” Henry Selick’s “Wendell & Wild,” Sebastian Lelio’s “The Wonder,” and Sarah Polley’s “Women Talking.” Not to mention, previously announced, Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans,” Nicolas Stoller’s “BROS,” and Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” sequel.
