Andrew Dominik Confirms ‘Blonde’ is NC-17, Edited Without His Guidance; Cannes Premiere Being Eyed

February 11, 2022 Jordan Ruimy

We broke a bombshell piece back in the fall of 2021 involving Netflix’s disdain towards Andrew Dominik’s NC-17 rated “Blonde.” The film was even pulled from the Venice Film Festival in the last-minute due to an epic battle between filmmaker and studio.

Speaking to Screen Daily, Dominik acknowledged that his upcoming Marilyn Monroe biopic is indeed NC-17, a rating which be described as “a bunch of horseshit”. “Blonde” would be the first Netflix Original to receive the ultra-prohibitive certification.

“It’s a demanding movie,” he said. “If the audience doesn’t like it, that’s the fucking audience’s problem. It’s not running for public office.

”It’s an NC-17 movie about Marilyn Monroe, it’s kind of what you want, right?” he continued. “I want to go and see the NC-17 version of the Marilyn Monroe story.”

Another confirmation is that Netflix indeed Harvey-ed, so to speak, Dominik’s film by bringing in acclaimed editor Jennifer Lame (Manchester By The Sea) “to curb the excesses of the movie.” Yikes.

So, we can also theorize that this will not be a “director’s cut”.

Dominik added that he also hopes the film will premiere in Cannes in May in an out-of-Competition spot. That would actually make a lot of sense since Cannes has always allowed Netflix to premiere their films in any sidebar, but competition.

I can also break the news that the film is supposedly just 95 minutes.
