First Photo For Catherine Breillat’s ‘Last Summer’

December 22, 2022 Jordan Ruimy

It looks like one of the great French filmmakers of the last 30+ years will be coming out of her unannounced retirement for, at least, one last film. Catherine Breillat cast Léa Drucker for her upcoming L’été dernier (Last Summer). Production has wrapped.

Drucker will be joining a cast that already includes Olivier Rabourdin and Clotilde Cournau. Mega-producer Saïd Ben Saïd posted a first image on his social media.

It’s been a decade since Breillat’s last film, the scathingly original “Abuse of Weakness.” This latest film is said to be a remake of May el-Toukhy’s “Queen of Hearts.”

I interviewed Breillat more than 6 years ago and she was quite adamant that there was no future for more films in her career. That seems to have changed, Breillat is known for her countless cinematic provocations which includes the likes of “Romance,” Fat Girl,” and “The Last Mistress.”

You can now add her new film to other good bets for Cannes 2023, which include the likes of Dumont, Rohrwacher, Ceylan, Campillo, Sissako, Triet, Bonello Garrone, Loach, Maiwenn, Moretti and Franco. I can’t see Breillat not making it into competition.
