Shang-Chi Criticizes Tarantino/Scorsese’s Marvel Hate, Says ‘Golden Age’ of Cinema Was “White as Hell”

November 22, 2022 Jordan Ruimy

Oh my, Simu Liu, better known as Shang-Chi, is pretty angry at Quentin Tarantino’s recent remarks bashing Marvel.

The latest round of criticism from Tarantino had the filmmaker criticizing the “Marvel-ization” of Hollywood on Tom Segura’s podcast. Of course, this rubbed Liu the wrong way, after all he IS Shang-Chi, but did he really need to make it about race?

No movie studio is or ever will be perfect. But I'm proud to work with one that has made sustained efforts to improve diversity onscreen by creating heroes that empower and inspire people of all communities everywhere. I loved the "Golden Age" too.. but it was white as hell

Liu criticizing filmmakers like Tarantino and Scorsese’s reverence for their love of “golden age” Hollywood is rich. He’s part of a money-grabbing machine (Disney/Marvel) that’s destroying the medium, but he seems oblivious to this fact, he’d rather just mention that his movie made $400 million and stars non-white actors.

Liu added that Tarantino and Scorsese “are transcendent auteurs. But they don’t get to point their nose at me or anyone.”

2021’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” was a piece of crap that broke ground as the first Marvel movie with an Asian lead and grossed more than $432 million at the pandemic box office, etc. etc. A sequel has already been greenlight, Liu will pocket several millions for it, all this as quality filmmaking continues to diminish in the US.
