Sight and Sound Poll Intel?

November 28, 2022 Jordan Ruimy

I’ve refrained from posting intel that was brought forth by a reader, especially since they are unvetted and I can’t really tell how legitimate their source is (because they understandably refuse to name them). Regardless, it’s a slow news day and the Sight and Sound poll is just days away, so why not speculate about this coming Thursday’s list.

The intel claims that “Spirited Away,” “Parasite” and “Get Out” have all made the top 100. What?! Also, “Chungking Express,” “The Gleaners & I,” “The Shining,” “My Neighbour Totoro,” and “Tropical Malady” are now part of the top 100.

This same person only shared the near bottom half of the top 100, from #66-100. Have other recent films been added into the #1-65 slots? Some prime contenders could include “Tree of Life,” and “There Will Be Blood.”

With the upcoming 2022 list, we had to expect a generational shift to occur. The amount of voters has nearly doubled, from 846 to nearly 1600. The critics I grew up with have evaporated, either retired or dead, and the young bloods might start pushing forward the likes of Scorsese. Lynch. Wong Kar-Wai. Kubrick.

Modern movies were very much absent from the last list in 2012. Are the best movies of today inferior to the best movies of the past? Maybe it’s a question of letting movies stand the test of time and prove they can resonate with later generations. This latest poll of voters may have shaken things up with “Parasite” and “Get Out”

Again, take this intel with a major grain of salt, at least until the list is officially revealed on Thursday.
