‘Lightyear’: Pixar Creatives Are Fighting Hard For Theatrical Release, Threatening to Sue and Quit

January 23, 2022 Jordan Ruimy

I’m hearing that there’s a lot of infighting going on at Pixar over Disney dumping their films on Disney Plus for free.

If you remember, back in the summer of 2020 I had exclusively reported that “Soul” was going to skip theatrical release and go straight to the Disney streaming service. People were aghast, in disbelief, absolutely did not believe the intel that I had. And, guess what? A few months later that’s exactly what happened.

Ever since the “Soul” dump, which was very profitable for Disney Plus as it helped bump their last and first quarter numbers to the stratosphere, Pixar films such as “Luca” and “Turning Red” were relegated to skip theatres altogether.

Now there’s a sort of civil war going on within the company between Pixar and Disney, much of it having to do with this coming summer’s Toy Story spin-off, “Lightyear.” You can call it desperation mode since some Pixar workers have actually sought the idea of suing the Mouse House.

Welcome to the “New Normal”, boys and girls.

So you blame Disney? The Pixar films have been bumping up Disney Plus numbers to the nth degree. “Luca” was the #1 most streamed movie of 2021. “Turning Red” will probably have killer numbers as well. Can you just imagine how successful “Lightyear” is going to be?
