NYFF Announces Lineup: Almodovar, Campion, Ducournau, Verhoeven and More

August 10, 2021 Jordan Ruimy

The 59th New York Film Festival will have the majority of its lineup composed of Cannes 2021 titles. A total of 8 competition titles, 5 out-of-competition and 6 from Director’s Fortnight will will make the trek from the croisette to the Big Apple this year, and that includes Julia Ducournau’s Palme d’Or winning “Titane” (which is skipping Telluride).

The Berlinale seems to have also outgunned Venice this year. Only three Venice entries made the NYFF cut: Pedro Almodovar’s “Parallel Mothers,” Michelangelo Frammartino‘s “Il Buco” and Jane Campion’s “The Power of Dog” - the latter will be the only film this fall to screen at Venice, Toronto, Telluride and New York.

Berlin Film Festival titles include the likes of Céline Sciamma (“Petite Maman”) Hong Sang-soo (“Introduction”), Ramon Zulcher (“The Girl With the Spider”), Ryûsuke Hamaguchi (“Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy”) and Golden Bear winner Radu Jude (“Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn”). Meanwhile, two Sundance Film Festival entries made the cut: Rebecca Hall’s “Passing,” and Jonas Poher Rasmussen’s “Flee.”

Of note, the total absence of World Premieres from Locarno, Telluride and Toronto.

Some of the directors the NYFF selection snubbed this year include Sean Baker (“Red Rocket”), Mike Mills (C’mon C’mon), Paul Schrader (“The Card Counter”), Asghar Farhadi (“A Hero”) Paolo Sorrentino (“The Hand of God”), Terrence Davies (“Benediction”) and Pablo Larrain (“Spencer”).

NYFF also announced the nixing of their previously announced hybrid format for this year’s lineup. There are now no digital screenings planned. Suffice to say, there’s a bit of a backlash happening on Twitter over this :
