Telluride Lineup Would Have Included ‘Nomadland,' ‘The French Dispatch' and ‘Soul'

July 18, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

The Telluride Film Festival was canceled earlier in the week. Studios were said to be very reluctant in sending out their talent to the prestigious Colorado-set film festival, which was supposed to begin during the final days of August.

The always-reliable Anne Thompson published her weekly IndieWire column, in it, she has the scoop that the Telluride 2020 program would have included the world premiere of Chloe Zhao’s “Nomadland.” The film follows unemployed workers traveling the country as they look for work, with Frances McDormand playing a woman looking for a new job after being hit by the Great Recession of 2008. Zhao’s critically-acclaimed debut feature, “The Rider,” which was about an injured rodeo performer, turned more than a few heads when it premiered at Cannes’ Director’s Fortnight sidebar back in 2018.

According to Thompson, other films reportedly part of the Telluride lineup include Francis Lee‘s “Ammonite,”, Wes Anderson‘s “The French Dispatch” Steve McQueen‘s anthology films “Mangrove” and “Lovers Rock,” Gianfranco Rosi‘s documentary “Notturno,” and Pixar‘s upcoming “Soul.”

Regardless, there will soon be no more speculation as, in the coming weeks, Telluride is set to announce the lineup of films that would have been part of its 2020 edition. A total of 20 films will get the badge of honor, it’s not hard to guess what some of the lineup will look like. Here are 22 films that I believe will be shared amongst the various fall festivals this year (TIFF, NYFF, Telluride). It will be updated accordingly in the weeks and months to come.

Soul (Pete Docter)
