Netflix will debut a brand new animated adventure in 2020, with director Glen Keane (animator on “Aladdin”, “Beauty and the Beast” “The Little Mermaid”) stepping behind the camera for the first time with “Over the Moon.”
This is an animated musical fantasy that follows a young girl who builds a rocket and ventures to the moon in search of a legendary Moon goddess. Could this compete against Pixar’s “Soul” for Best Animated Feature? All signs point to yes. The just-released trailer showcases beautiful, Disney-like animation.
The film includes voice acting from Cathy Ang, Phillipa Soo, Robert G. Chiu, Ken Jeong, John Cho, Ruthie Ann Miles, Margaret Cho, Kimiko Glenn, Artt Butler, and Sandra Oh.
Netflix has only recently been more serious about producing animation. “The Willoughbys” was released earlier this year, and this year’s Oscar-nominated “Klaus” and “I Can’t Find My Body” legitimized their street cred for the genre. They also have movies coming up from stalwart filmmakers such as Alex Hirsch, Jorge Gutierrez, Chris Williams, and Henry Selick.
“Over the Moon” doesn’t have a released date, but is scheduled to be released this fall.
