Sofia Coppola Details New Bill Murray Film ‘On The Rocks’

April 22, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

In a new interview with 92Y and Annette Insdorf (via IndieWire), director Sofia Coppola is finally revealing plot details of her upcoming A24/AppleTV+ movie titled “On the Rocks”:

“This is Bill Murray and Rashida Jones,” Coppola said. “Yes, they play father and daughter, and she’s married to Marlon Wayans, a successful businessman who is traveling a lot and has a beautiful assistant. [Rashida’s character] has suspicions. The dad, who’s kind of a sophisticated playboy, gets her paranoid because he’s seeing men through his point of view. It’s sort of the clash between the two generations and her being a young woman and he’s a gentleman of another generation.”

“It’s kind of the clash of how they look at relationships and also how your relationship with your parent affects your relationships in your life. We finished a little while ago. It’s the two of them as a father and daughter sort of on a little adventure to spy on her husband. It’s a lot of them talking about life and men and women over martinis in New York.”

“On the Rocks’ has no release date as of now. It was rumored to premiere at this September’s Venice Film Festival, but, of course, we don’t really know if that festival will even happen given the current lockdown and social distancing guidelines due to the COVID-19 pandemic Apple has expressed interest in giving this film a theatrical release, but with the virus raging on, maybe Coppola will be open to having her film premiere directly on the AppleTV+ streaming platform, especially if Oscar eligibility rules are changed and streamed films are allowed to compete for next year’s ceremony.

As for the filmmaker herself, Coppola’s last film, “The Beguiled,” won her the Directing prize at Cannes 2017. “On The Rocks” represents her first collaboration with Bill Murray since they both teamed-up back in 2003 for “Lost in Translation.”
