‘The Farewell' Wins the 2020 Spirit Award for Best Feature

February 9, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

Lulu Wang’s beautiful “The Farewell” won the Best Feature prize at the 2020 Indie Spirit Awards. Well-deserved (even though I would have given it to “Uncut Gems”). This turns out to be a very bittersweet win for Wang, whose film was completely shut out of today’s Oscar race for Best Picture. It surely deserved to be there instead of Greta Gerwig’s overpraised “Little Women” alas life is not always fair and Wang will hopefully prove her doubters wrong with whatever her next feature is. Ditto Awkwafina, robbed of a Best Actress Oscar nomination (the Academy decided Cynthia Erivo’s Oscar-bait work in “Harriett” was a better option). Zhao Shuzhen (who played Nai Nai) won the Best Supporting Actress trophy as well at the Indie Spirits.
