“Nomadland” Named Best Picture of 2020 by Boston Film Critics

December 13, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

As we prepare for New York or Los Angeles film critics to announce their awards this week, their peers in Boston got a head start this afternoon.

The Boston Society of Film Critics started what will likely be a familiar refrain this awards season by selecting Chloe Zhao’s “Nomadland” as the Best Film of the year. Zhao also nabbed Best Director honors and Best Cinematography went to Joshua James Richards‘ Malick-Esque imagery in the film.

Zhao’s film is expected to take top honors at the aforementioned L.A. and NYC critics awards. Last week, “Nomadland” was named best movie of 2020 via a World of Reel poll of over 100 critics. It bested Kelly Reichardt’s “First Cow,” which was also Boston’s runner-up for best film.

A24’s “Minari” took home two awards, Best Supporting Actress (Youn Yuh-Jung) and Best Score (Emile Mosseri). Netflix’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” won the Best Ensemble award. Meanwhile, Sidney Flanigan took Best Actress for “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” and Anthony Hopkins won Best Actor for “The Father.”
