2020 BAFTA Nominations: 'Joker' Leads the Field With 11 Nominations

January 7, 2020 Theo Fisher

This condensed awards season continues to speed by as this morning saw the announcement of the 73rd BAFTA Film Awards nominations. Warner Bros “Joker” will be laughing all the way to London’s Royal Albert Hall, after the $1.1B Box Office smash led the field with 11 nominations, including Best Film (of which there are only five at the BAFTA’s) Best director for Todd Phillips, and Best Actor for star Joaquin Phoenix.

Coming in just behind the clown prince of crime was Netflix’s “The Irishman” and Sony’s “Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood” as the Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino directed pictures scored 10 nods each, whilst recent Golden Globe winner “1917” rounded out the top four with nine nominations to its name.

All the talk this morning, however, is the presence of all-white acting categories. Actors who have felt like ever-presents during this season were left in the cold Tuesday morning, including Cynthia Erivo (considered a lock before today) for “Harriet”, Eddie Murphy (“Dolemite is my Name”), Awkwafina for Lulu Wang’s superb “The Farewell”, Lupita Nyong’o for “Us” and Jennifer Lopez for “Hustlers”. In fact, Lopez was left out of the supporting actress category in favor of a double dose of Margot Robbie, after the Australian landed nominations (all be it for two good performances) for both “Bombshell” and “Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood”. As for Lead Actress, it was no surprise to see those above left out in place of the extremely talented Jessie Buckley for “Wild Rose”, given the organization’s nature of favoring home talent.

There were however some welcome surprises, from an original screenplay nomination for “Booksmart” (written by Susanna Fogel, Emily Halpern, Sarah Haskins, Katie Silberman), to a Cinematography nomination for Jarin Blaschke’s superb work in “The Lighthouse”, and a foreign language nomination for Celine Sciamma’s “Portrait of a Lady On Fire”.

Let us know what you think of this morning’s announcement, and who you think will win!
