Telluride Film Festival Predictions [Updated]

August 7, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

We do want to recap the possible titles for the final Telluride Film Festival lineup, what with the New York Film Festival having announced their slate just yesterday.

Almost certainly going to Telluride:

Ford v. Ferrari, The Two Popes, The Aeronauts, Uncut Gems, Judy, Motherless Brooklyn, Marriage Story, First Cow, The Truth, Pain and Glory, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Parasite, Varda by Agnes, Beanpole, A Hidden Life, The Report

Possibilities:

Family Romance LLC, Country Music/Ryman Concert, The Climb, The Good Liar, Untitled Todd Haynes Project, Lucy in the Sky, Seberg

The latest updates are as follows:

In: “First Cow,” “Beanpole,” “A Hidden Life,” “The Report”
Possibilities: Untitled Todd Haynes, “Family Romance LLC Bonus” (Herzog), “The Climb”
Out: “Atlantics,” “Bacurau,” “Liberté,” “Martin Eden,” “Oh Mercy!,” “Saturday Fiction,” “Sibyl,” “Synonyms,” “The Traitor,” “Wasp Network,” “Wild Goose Lake,” “Young Ahmed,” “Zombi Child.”

There have been whispers about Scott Z. Burns' “The Report” (Sundance) and Terrence Malick’s “A Hidden Life” (Cannes) both playing Telluride in late August. We will have confirmation on these only when the full lineup is announced on August 30th.

I mean, we have 15 or so confirmed titles for Telluride. The final lineup usually has, what, 30 or so movies? I wonder if any surprises will happen. There definitely is room for that to occur, maybe a Todd Haynes?

Of note: I do want to acknowledge that, despite most of our sourcing coming directly in-house, Michael Patterson’s passionate and insightful early coverage leading up to the Telluride Film Festival has been nothing short of essential. Because of his intel and overall knowledge of the fest we have been able to add a few titles and possibilities (Country Music, Family Romance, The Climb) .

The full lineup of the 46th annual Telluride Film Festival will be announced on August 30th. The festival itself starts from August 31st until September 3rd.
