‘Mulan' actress Liu Yifel's Support of Hong Kong Police Sparks #BoycottMulan on Social Media

August 16, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

Why would “Mulan” actress Liu Yifel support the authoritarian police state crackdown of Hong Kong by the Chinese government? It boggles the mind to think that she would think it’s the right thing to do, to support President Xi’s government and Hong Kong preventing democracy from taking shape.

Yifei posted an image on the Chinese social media network Weibo that sparked controversy after it appeared that the Disney actress decided to take a stand in solidarity with Hong Kong police, despite reports that they used excessive force against peaceful protesters and journalists (via Newsweek).

Liu shared an image that said, “I support Hong Kong’s police, you can beat me up now.” Which was quickly followed by a statement in English that read, “What a shame for Hong Kong” and “#Ialsosupporthongkongpolice#.” This led to #BoycottMulan trending on social media. Her post has since been deleted, but the damage, and freely circulating screenshots, are available for public mass consumption. Will she now be fired by Disney?
