As previously and exclusively reported by yours truly back in July, the official Netflix streaming release date for Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” will be Thanksgiving weekend, November 27th.
According to Deadline, Netflix has also settled on a theatrical release strategy for “The Irishman,” which will begin on November 1st in New York City and Los Angeles, expanding the following weeks into other cities in the U.S. “The Irishman” is getting a solid four weeks of theatrical exclusivity around the country before arriving on Netflix on November 27. And yet, Netflix wasn’t able to nab important theater chains like AMC, Cinemark, Regal, and Cineplex into their plans for theatrical distribution. And so, it seems like Scorsese’s mob saga will be treated as an indie and play art-houses all over the country instead.
Scorsese’s movie will not be skipping fall festivals as it is set to have its world premiere at the New York Film Festival during the last week of September, and a few days later the movie will be having its European debut at the BFI London Film Festival in early October.
"The Irishman" stars Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci and is based on Charles Brandt's novel "I Hear You Paint Houses.” The film will tell the story of Frank Sheeran, a man who claimed to have killed fellow Teamster Jimmy Hoffa.
Of note, Scorsese and De Niro have not teamed-up for a movie since 1995’s “Casino.” This automatically makes “The Irishman” the most anticipated movie of 2019 for cinephiles. No other movie comes close to the sheer anticipatory volume this mob saga has garnered these last few months.
