Venice Lineup To Include Soderbergh, Reichardt, Gray, Baumbach, Kore-eda, Polanski, Waititi and More

July 22, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

There was a tweet circulating online (from a reliable person I won’t name here) that revealed the full 21 film Venice competition lineup. Since then, the tweet been deleted.

Anyway, it looks like the significant players at the Lido this year will be: Soderbergh’s “The Laundromat,” Kelly Reichardt’s “First Cow,” James Gray’s “Ad Astra,” Taika Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit,”Kore-eda’s “The Truth,” Pablo Larrain’s “Ema,” Roy Andersson's "About Endlessness" Roman Polanski’s “An Officer and A Spy” and Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story.”

Ostensibly missing from the list of 21 were The Safdies’ “Uncut Gems,” Noah Hawley’s “Lucy in the Sky,” and Todd Phillips’ “Joker,” all of which, by the way, could be last-minute additions to the fest or make an appearance through the out-of-competition slots.

The Venice Film Festival will announce its lineup this coming Tuesday.

These are the 19 rumored competition titles:

An Officer and A Spy (Roman Polanski)
Ad Astra (James Gray)
The Laundromat (Steven Soderbergh)
First Cow (Kelly Reichardt)
Against All Enemies (Benedict Andrews)
Ema (Pablo Larrain)
Marriage Story (Noah Baumbach)
Jojo Rabbit (Taika Waitti)
The Pope (Fernando Mereilles)
The Truth (Hirokazu kore-eda)
About Endlessness (Roy Andersson)
The Goldfinch (John Crowley)
Martin Eden (Pietro Marcello)
Gloria Mundi (Robert Guédiguian)
Qui Ridio io (Mario Martone)
The Salt of Tears (Philippe Garrel)
Cherry Lane (Yonfan)
The Painted Bird (Václav Marhoul)
La mafia non è più quella di una volta (Franco Maresco)
