Writers Guild Awards 2019 Winners: ‘Eighth Grade' and ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?' win Original and Adapted Screenplay

I have to give my sincerest congratulations to  Bo Burnham (“Eighth Grade”) for winning the WGA’s Original Screenplay award, which goes against the entire narrative the academy tried to write for this years awards season. “To the other nominees in the category, have fun at the Oscars, losers!’” Burnham said at the podium. As you can imagine, Burnham wasn’t nominated for an Oscar, but who cares, right?

Also, “Can You Ever Forgive Me writers Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty won the WGA’s Best Adapted Screenplay award, another surprise. Well-deserved. What can I say, this is wonderful news as it is, to me at least, more legitimate than winning an Oscar considering your peers are still voting for this and it is the quintessential writing award in the industry.

Green Book's support is even softer than we think, I imagine. Bad news for Peter Farrelly’s film which, then again, wasn’t a crowd-pleaser for its by-the-books screenplay but because of its combination of cozy formula, solid acting, top-notch humor and feel-goodness vibes.
