Edgar Wright Praises “Ready Player One”: Steven Spielberg Is the ‘Master of Blocking Action Scenes’

March 25, 2018 Jordan Ruimy

I saw “Ready Player One” at SXSW and was surprised by how good it was [Review].

Director Edgar Wright went to the London premiere and quickly afterwards shared his rave on Twitter: Still processing the audio visual feast that is Spielberg’s ‘Ready Player One,’” Wright wrote. “It has several scenes that confirm him again as the master of blocking action set pieces (big and small).”

In case you're not familiar with the term, "blocking" is cinematic choreography. The use of actors, lighting and space. Spielberg has always been a master at that. It's basically the opposite of Michael Bay's relentless, assaultive style of action. Some great Spielberg movies with masterful blocking include "Minority Report," "Catch Me if You Can," and "War of the Worlds."

Still processing the audio visual feast that is Spielberg’s ‘Ready Player One’. It has several scenes that confirm again him as the master of blocking action set pieces (big and small). And given this must have been a gargantuan VFX challenge it could really be called ‘The Post’.
