Cue the ragebait — which is precisely what IndieWire intended when putting together their list of the 100 Best Sequels Ever Made, published this morning.
This is very much a James Gray movie — romantic, old-fashioned, sometimes overly serious, but also capable of delivering some incredible suspense.
The film stars Josh O’Connor, Frances McDormand, Damian Lewis, and Lesley Manville, but no plot details have been revealed. All we know is that it’s a “gothic mystery” set in 1880s Scotland.
Back in July, Variety reported that the film had been tipped to premiere at the Venice Film Festival — it ultimately did not show up inside this year’s lineup, and now we know why— it’ll be released next year.
This year’s 12th edition of the Scary Movies festival at Film at Lincoln Center premiered Ari Aster’s extended version of “Midsommar” this past Saturday.
The good news is that Cuarón is only writing “Ascension,” meaning he won’t be tied up with directing duties and should still have room in his schedule for a long-awaited return to cinema.
