AMC CEO Hints at Higher Ticket & Concession Prices For ‘Tenet' Screenings

August 12, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

It had to happen, with AMC Theatres having just posted quarterly losses of more than half a billion dollars, a reopening of its doors to hundreds of locations had to be imminent. Well, beginning later this month, that’s exactly what’s going to happen, as hundreds of its theaters will reopen for business, but with ticket and concession prices raised significantly. Why? Speaking on a recent investor’s call (via Variety), AMC CEO Adam Aron blamed the price hike on the rigorous training to make sure all of the employees are following the rules and, no, not because they have been on financial life support these lasted several months. What do you believe is the real reason?

August 11, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

The Netflix "ta-dum" soundmark is one of the all time greats, but doesn't work as well in a theater because it's only 3 seconds long.

So Netflix commissioned Hans Zimmer to extend it for theaters and ... it's ... so ... good.pic.twitter.com/RGw26vCAGY

Azael Jacobs' ‘French Exit’ To Close Out NYFF 2020

August 11, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

A hotshot NYC-based producer had told me a few weeks ago to watch out for this year’s New York Film Festival which, he said, “would blow away any lineup by Telluride, Toronto or Venice.” Well, an additional piece of the puzzle has been added today by the NYFF as they have announced that Azazel Jacobs’ “French Exit” will make its world premiere as the closing night selection of the upcoming festival. Jacobs’ film joins this 58th edition’s opening night (Steve McQueen’s “Lovers Rock”) and centerpiece film (Chloe Zhao’s “Nomadland”).

‘An American Pickle': Seth Rogen Plays Dual Roles in this Shapeless HBO Max Comedy [Review]

August 7, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

Seth Rogen plays dual roles in “American Pickle” an HBO Max comedy that fizzles out in its latter half. That’s too bad, really, because Rogen, at first, grabs your attention playing Herschel Greenbaum, a ditch-digger from a 1919 Eastern European shtetl — donning a Tevye beard straight out of “Fiddler on the Roof,” Herschel falls hard for Sarah (Sarah Snook). However, their wedding is a disaster, everyone except them gets killed by the evil Cossacks, which leads them to immigrate to Ellis Island. Herschel gets a job at a pickle factory, to support a pregnant Sarah, only to fall into a barrel of brine and get pickled for a century.

We were all shocked when a 63-year old Robin Williams kills himself in 2014. How could such a brilliant and, on the surface, joyful man feel so lonesome? The upcoming documentary “Robin’s Wish” tries to answer that question and, it turns out, much like everything in life, the answer is much more complicated than any media outlet would have led you believe at the time.

‘I’m Thinking of Ending Things’: Charlie Kaufman’s Moody Netflix Film Revealed [Trailer]

August 6, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

Netflix has become the go-to American studio for creative freedom and auteur-driven cinema. It’s not even a debate anymore. The studio system has become a cinematic cesspool of formulaic drivel. Netflix isn’t destroying cinema, rather, it’s actually saving it. Just look at the directors who decided to bring their passion projects to the streaming giant these last 5 years: Scorsese, Coen, Fincher, Soderbergh, Cuaron, Baumbach, Lee, and Bong. And now, the latest marquee name you can add to that list is Charlie Kaufman.
