The Daniels Win DGA

February 19, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

UPDATED: The Daniels have won the Directors Guild of America for their work on “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” This clearly makes their film the Best Picture frontrunner.

Now it’s on to the Producers Guild of America, where EEAO is also the odds-on-favorite to win. Goddammit. This indie movie won’t quit. It has a fervently rabid and passionate fanbase. Maybe the PGA are more clear-eyed and will not honour it, but I’m starting to doubt that.

It’s wild to see something so anti- “Oscar bait” becoming the presumptive frontrunner.

Spielberg not winning DGA basically closes The Fabelman’s chances when it comes to winning Best Picture. As Anne Thompson mentioned earlier in the week, it’s basically between EEAO, “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “Top Gun: Maverick.”

Also, what’s with host Judd Apatow attacking Tom Cruise all throughout the night?

EARLIER: The 75th annual Directors Guild of America Awards will be presented at the Beverly Hilton in tonight at 11:00 p.m. ET, during a non-televised ceremony hosted by Emmy-winning writer/director Judd Apatow.

Keep checking in here for updates and reactions to each winner announcement. Vegas odds have The Daniels winning the big prize, with Steven Spielberg close behind.

I say, watch out for Todd Field who is immensely respected from his peers and is even getting accolades from people who weren’t that taken by “TÁR.” You also have Martin McDonagh as a dark horse. Joseph Kosinski already won by getting nominated, no Oscar recognition means he’s definitely not winning.
