Sacha Baron Cohen to Star in Quentin Tarantino’s ‘The Popinjay Cavalier’ in London’s West End

Remember last summer when Quentin Tarantino hinted that he was pausing work on his tenth and final movie to write a play? Well, he wasn’t kidding.

Sacha Baron Cohen will star in Tarantino's stage play "The Popinjay Cavalier," according to Deadline.

Cohen will portray the title character. "The Popinjay Cavalier" is set to premiere in London's West End in spring 2027. It's being described as a "swashbuckling comedy" set in 1830s Europe — a British-style farce filled with slapstick chaos, awkward mishaps and characters constantly being mistaken for someone else.

The synopsis: "The Popinjay Cavalier is a rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise inspired by the grand swashbuckling epics of stage and screen. A sweeping celebration of theatre and its heightened romance, told with Tarantino's signature style and unmistakable wit."

The plan, for now, is to premiere the play in the famed West End. There's no other strategy at the moment. If it does turn into a major success, however, Tarantino could potentially take ‘Popinjay’ on tour in the US and other countries — though we're thinking way ahead at this point.

Tarantino is reportedly in negotiations with several other actors to join the production, with more details expected soon. One thing seems certain: he's in no rush to begin work on his tenth and final film. That project may have to wait until summer 2027 or 2028.

Then again, Tarantino has raised the possibility that ‘Popinjay’ could turn out to be his final film. In August 2025, before the play even had a title, Tarantino said that if the stage production was well received, he could adapt it into his tenth and final film.
