Here’s an update on Fernando Meirelles’ “Here Comes the Flood,” a heist thriller starring Denzel Washington, Robert Pattinson, and Daisy Edgar-Jones, which wrapped production in January.
Back in July, Variety reported that the film had been tipped to premiere at the Venice Film Festival — it ultimately did not show up inside this year’s lineup, and now we know why— it’ll be released next year.
Variety’s Clayton Davis is reporting that Netflix has punted “Here Comes the Flood” to 2027 due to its already stacked awards lineup. They could have just not acquired “Ink” and pushed ‘Flood,’ but something tells me they just don’t have much confidence in this one being an awards player.
Meirelles, the Brazilian filmmaker best known for “City of God,” “The Constant Gardener,” and “The Two Popes,” is returning to genre filmmaking with Simon Kinberg’s twist-filled script.
The film has seen considerable changes over the past few years. Jason Bateman was initially attached to direct in 2021, and at one point, Robert Downey Jr. was also in discussions to join. Still, one constant in the latest version of the project is Kinberg’s script, which has firmly remained in place — is that actually a positive?
Yes, Kinberg is a case for concern: his best-reviewed films are “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” “Sherlock Holmes,” and “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” His filmography is otherwise fairly mediocre, including “XXX: State of the Union,” “Jumper,” “This Means War,” “Dark Phoenix,” “The 355,” and “Fantastic Four” (2015).
Described as an “unconventional heist movie,” “Here Comes the Flood” will reportedly center on a bank guard, a teller, and a master thief caught in a web of deception and shifting alliances. Expect cons within cons, layered betrayals, and Meirelles’ highly stylized, visually driven storytelling.
