Oh, Jared Leto. His career was already a dumpster fire of chaos, and now it’s gotten even worse—potentially the final nail in the coffin.
A scathing reporting this morning has four women accusing Leto of sexual misconduct and assault, alleging the incidents took place when they were teenagers.
The allegations come from the BBC, which says it has reviewed photos, messages, and even an NDA that Leto allegedly sent to one of the women, all of which it says corroborate their accounts.
Leto is coming off playing the main villain in “Masters of the Universe.” He did not attend the film’s premiere. He was also absent from the studio’s CinemaCon presentation and did no interviews to promote the $175M movie. In fact, he hasn’t mentioned it or posted a single message about “Masters of the Universe” to his 11.4 million Instagram followers.
Honestly, Amazon downplaying Leto’s involvement was a no-brainer? He’s become something of box-office poison in recent years.
It seems that nearly every film Leto is attached to struggles to find an audience: from “Morbius,” which flopped, to “House of Gucci,” which underperformed, to “Tron: Ares,” which bombed. His involvement doesn’t automatically doom a film, of course, but in a high-stakes, $200M blockbuster like “Masters of the Universe,” it’s yet another gamble Amazon clearly took seriously.
Ever since Leto won an Oscar for “Dallas Buyers Club,” it’s been slim pickings. He currently has no projects slated to begin production this year. Whether these allegations permanently derail his career remains to be seen, but the timing couldn’t be worse.
