Universal Pictures has confirmed standalone Donkey movie from DreamWorks Animation, set to hit theaters on June 30, 2028, confirming comments Eddie Murphy made last year.
The animated spinoff will serve as an origin story exploring how Donkey became the Waffle-loving sidekick fans know from the Shrek franchise. The film is co-directed by Charlie Bean (“The Lego Batman Movie”), and Matt Flynn (“The Wild Robot,” “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish”).
Murphy previously revealed the story would also feature Donkey’s dragon wife and their half-dragon, half-donkey children. Very exciting.
The announcement arrives ahead of “Shrek 5,” which opens June 30, 2027, and underscores DreamWorks’ confidence in the franchise, whose six films have generated roughly $4 billion worldwide, with the two ‘Puss in Boots’ spinoffs alone earning a combined $1 billion at the global box office.
