Question: if you were forced at gunpoint to watch either a David Leitch or Chad Stahelski movie, which would you choose? Both filmmakers emerged from the stunt world and have been at the forefront of mainstream action moviemaking, for better or worse.
Leitch’s latest film, “How to Rob A Bank,” which is set for release this fall, now has a trailer. This time, the song selected to play in the background is Radiohead’s “Karma Police.”
The film follows a group of bank robbers, led by Nicholas Hoult’s alpha male, who call themselves The Wolf Pack. They use social media to document their heists, playing a cat-and-mouse game with a detective played by John C. Reilly and assisted by a technologically gifted criminal portrayed by Zoe Kravitz. Pete Davidson, Anna Sawai, and Rhenzy Feliz complete the cast. The screenplay comes from “Hunters” writer Mark Bianculli.
A recent test-screening reaction, via TheInSneider, hinted that some of the action in the film would employ a DIY TikTok/YouTube/Instagram aesthetic. The movie is partially shot in this style, most notably during the robbery sequences.
Leitch, a stunt coordinator-turned-filmmaker, is an interesting case study. He specializes in action and, for the most part, has enjoyed a successful career directing high-octane films such as “John Wick,” “Atomic Blonde,” “Deadpool 2,” “Hobbs & Shaw,” and “Bullet Train.”
Leitch most recently helmed 2024’s “The Fall Guy,” starring Ryan Gosling, which earned strong reviews despite disappointing at the box office. Before hopping aboard “How to Rob A Bank,” he was slated to direct “Jurassic World Rebirth,” but he abruptly exited the project due to “creative differences,” leaving Universal scrambling for a replacement. That replacement ultimately turned out to be Gareth Edwards.
Amazon/MGM plans a wide theatrical release for “How to Rob A Bank” over Labor Day weekend, with a premiere date set for September 4, 2026.
