Let’s see how this one turns out.
“John Rambo” has been dated for a June 4, 2026 release via Lionsgate. The only other wide release on June 4 next year is an untitled film from Paramount.
Jalmari Helander is directing, which at least promises some R-rated mayhem. Helander did an outstanding job helming his 2023 WWII action film “Sisu,” which featured stylized kills and a dark sense of humor. He released the sequel last year.
Noah Centineo has the starring role. James Franco recently joined the ensemble, which also includes David Harbour as Rambo’s commanding officer, Major Trautman. The screenplay is penned by writing duo Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani (“Black Adam”).
Meanwhile, Rambo himself, Sylvester Stallone, was originally not involved in this reboot, but was later added as an executive producer to the film, which will serve as the origin story of the character, set during the Vietnam War.
For Centineo, this marks a potential career-boosting role. After breakout success with Netflix’s “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” and “The Recruit,” he’s also gearing up to play Ken Masters in the “Street Fighter” adaptation, with a 2026 release date set. More recently, Centineo was seen in A24’s “Warfare” from Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland.
“John Rambo” will be the sixth film in the franchise, which has generated over $800M worldwide. The most recent installment, 2019’s “Rambo: Last Blood,” grossed $92M worldwide at the box office.
