Movie theaters have been very busy these last few weeks, and that’s good enough reason to cheer on films like “Super Mario Bros. Galaxy Movie,” “Project Hail Mary,” “Michael,” and now, “The Devil Wears Prada 2” — all released within the last six weeks.
In fact, “Prada 2,” which is now in theaters, might join the other three in having an opening weekend in the $80M range, as it earned $10M in Thursday previews. The audience for this one heavily skews female, with Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep leading the cast, and fashion magazines endlessly covering its pre-release buzz.
The first film, released in 2006, had a $27M opening, which this sequel is about to triple, ultimately earning $326M worldwide and gaining a subsequent loyal following via home video and, in recent years, streaming. There’s no reason to doubt that the sequel, budgeted at $100M, will exceed those numbers — and then some.
