The movies keep piling up for Guy Ritchie, who has released six movies in four years, and continues to sign on to new projects. Does he ever take a break?
The latest has just been announced by Netflix. It's called “Dogfight,” and it will reunite the filmmaker with Jason Statham for a “stylish revenge actioner” set in the London criminal underworld. No other plot details have been revealed, but obviously, you know, lots of guns. Cameras roll in early 2027, with filming taking place in the U.K.
Ritchie and Statham have collaborated on six movies so far in their careers, so this will be lucky number seven. The others are “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels,” “Snatch,” “Revolver,” “Wrath of Man,” “Operation Fortune,” and the upcoming “Viva La Madness.”
Coming off the Apple-produced “Fountain of Youth,” and "In the Grey," the latter significantly delayed before being quietly dumped by Black Bear this past January, Ritchie has another troubled film on his hands: "Wife & Dog,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Rosamund Pike, which finally hits theaters in February 2027.
Ritchie built his reputation with stylish British crime comedies like "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" and "Snatch," earning a devoted following in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Then came more crime fare with “Revolver” (2005) and “RocknRolla” (2008).
Of the many filmmakers influenced by Tarantino in the ’90s, Ritchie seemed like one of the few with genuine staying power. In the 2010s, however, he pivoted toward big-budget studio projects, including "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword," "Aladdin," "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.," and the two "Sherlock Holmes" movies. I did like his brief pivot back to action in the pandemic era with “Wrath of Man” and “The Covenant.”
Unsurprisingly, alongside “Wife & Dog,” Ritchie already has another film in the can: "Viva La Madness," a spiritual sequel to "Layer Cake," also starring Statham, which will hit theaters in February 2028. On top of that, he's directed and produced four television series over the last three years. The man loves to work.
