So, Steven Soderbergh is finishing "The Batman Part II." Not a sentence I expected to type this year, but here we are.
Robert Pattinson is now speaking to GamesRadar+ about it and sounds genuinely thrilled that the film has been given a chance to reach the finish line
I am so happy he's come on to help Matt," he said. "It's incredibly generous of him – and he's doing it in the loveliest way. It's completely selfless. I think Matt had put so much work into the script, and we're almost done. So for someone to come in and say, 'I just want to help Matt do it; I want to do it in conjunction with him and just get it to the edit.' And to have someone who's as talented as Steven doing it is great.
This was a beautiful gesture, if you ask me: a filmmaker helping out a fellow filmmaker. Soderbergh has directed every kind of movie: micro-budget, small, mid-budget and big-budget. The film is in good hands.
Asked when filming picks back up, Pattinson said, "I think they're in production already. And I'm starting in a couple of days."
Good news, then. As I had previously reported, around six weeks of production remained, so Soderbergh and crew should be done by early December.
Quick recap: Warner Bros. said on Oct. 5 that Matt Reeves was stepping away to deal with a family matter. "Production on 'The Batman Part II' has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter," a studio rep said. "Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon."
Reeves then posted on X to make clear he isn't going anywhere: "Just to be clear, I am not leaving 'The Batman Part II.' I am profoundly grateful to Steven for coming to my aid during this challenging time to help me finish principal photography. Thank you to all for your concern and well wishes."
James Gunn said much the same on Threads: "Matt is still the director of 'The Batman 2' and always will be. I can't express how profoundly grateful and moved we are by Steven's offer to help him complete his vision."
Soderbergh's statement: "I thought Matt Reeves' work on 'The Batman' was stunning; it was intentional, specific, and rigorously coherent. The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what's already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film."
I actually think Soderbergh is the right guy for this. He works fast, he shoots his own stuff, and he's never been about ego. Funny, though, since Reeves is notorious for doing a million takes and Soderbergh is basically the opposite. Should be interesting to see if anyone can spot the differences on-screen.
No word yet on whether the Feb. 18, 2028 release date is moving. If they really are close to wrapping, maybe it doesn't have to.
